The New Cuedos based Sajid Khan is the first player to reach quarter final of Bradford Championship 2009.
Khan was trailing 2-1 from the first leg against last year semi finalist John Wellham. John had an excellent 47 break with help of two flukes to win the first frame of night on blue ball to go 3-1.
Former Bradford Champion Khan who looked certain to be out of this year Bradford Championship found his form in the fifth frame and showed how well he can play when the heat is on. Khan won the last three frames to beat John Wellham 4-3 and go into quarters.Bradford professionals Simon Bedford and Wayne Cooper face each other next week in the first qualifying round of the Welsh Open at Pontin’s in Prestatyn.
Both are searching for a win which will boost their chances of remaining on snooker’s main tour next season.
Out of the 96 professionals in that, Bedford is better placed in the provisional rankings, lying 68th following the Masters, with Cooper precariously placed in the bottom 16, who will be relegated.
In last week’s qualifiers for the China Open at the same venue, Bedford won his first match 5-4 against China’s Liu Chuang, but lost to former Masters semi-finalist Andy Hicks 5-2 in the second round.
Cooper was on the wrong end of a 5-2 defeat to Daniel Wells in his first-round match, although Cooper could quite easily have been 4-0 up.
Yorkshire Inter-District League Division One champions Bradford No 1 continued their fine form with a hard-fought 3-3 draw at Castleford.
Kevin Firth fell short in the first frame, losing a black-ball game against Micky Tomlinson, who played outstandingly in the next to put the home side 2-0 up.
Castleford’s county player Pete Fisher raced away with a 39 break in the third frame and it seemed as though the writing could be on the wall, but Sajid Khan fought back well to pinch the frame on the black.
Khan then levelled with an excellent 46 break before Jason Walton edged a scrappy fifth, again on the black, to put the visitors 3-2 in front, with opponent John Arnold coming from 49 points down to steal the final frame in yet another black-ball game.
